Identification

Big nighthawk with a short tail and long rounded wings. The body is sandy brown with black spots, contrasting with a white throat and belly. In flight shows white underwings, black outer wings and a prominent white wing patch. Males have a white tip to the tail. Occurs in grasslands, savannas, marshes, and at forest edges; sometimes forming large flocks.
