Legend Overview
Introduction
Lesser Antillean Pewee is endemic to the islands of Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, and St. Lucia, and three subspecies are generally recognized, of which the northernmost, Contopus latirostris blancoi, is sometimes given species status as Puerto Rican Pewee. All three subspecies are principally dark olive brown above, with a slight crest, becoming duskier over the wings and tail, but they differ in their underparts coloration, which is rufous cinnamon on St. Lucia, dull buffish on Puerto Rico, and even paler on the three other islands. Throughout its range, Lesser Antillean Pewee generally occurs in upland forests, although locally it is found in drier areas and coastal mangroves. The behavior of Lesser Antillean Pewee is typical of the genus.
